Castello e Borgo Volante

Photography tells the story of music

Registration is now open for the Coolclub SEI Festival workshop with Leonello Bertolucci

You have until Friday 4 July to take part in the workshop ‘Photography Tells the Story of Music’: from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th July at the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto, the nineteenth edition of Coolclub’s SEI Festival, themed “Circles in the Water”, will host a programme curated by Leonello Bertolucci, aimed at professionals and enthusiasts alike, combining theory, practical fieldwork and collaborative editing. The starting point will be a question as simple as it is complex: “Should stage photography be limited to documenting what happens, or can it become a narrative, a vision, an interpretation?”.

The workshop will begin on Thursday 24 July (from 10.00 to 17.00) with the first theoretical session, during which the distinctive features of photography as applied to various forms of performance will be explored, with a focus on live music and its many forms (rock, jazz, rap, folk, classical). There will also be a focus on shooting techniques, the skilful use of light, backstage dynamics and the development of broader narrative projects. Over the course of the three evenings, participants will then contribute to the creation of a collective visual narrative that includes not only the live performance but also the staging, rehearsals, the audience and the people working behind the scenes.

The festival will feature performances by Giorgio Poi, Tamango and Altea (Thursday 24th), Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Il mago del Gelato, Quantic (Friday 25th), Marco Castello and Son Rompe Pera (Saturday 26th). To support the portrait work, a studio will also be set up, equipped with backdrops, lighting and other professional accessories provided by the organisers. The final part of the workshop will be dedicated to collaborative editing and the analysis of the most significant images, to explore their communicative and aesthetic power in greater depth. The workshop, which is aimed at anyone with a digital camera (DSLR or mirrorless), costs 150 euros to attend. Registration requests must be received no later than 4 July at 3331803375

Leonello Bertolucci was born in Liguria and moved to Milan in the 1980s, where he began his career in photojournalism, collaborating with Italian publications and agencies. His work soon crossed national borders, leading to major international collaborations, including one with the historic Parisian agency Sygma. His photographs have been published in magazines such as *Time*, *Newsweek*, *Stern*, *Paris Match*, *Epoca* and many others. He is currently a contributor to Getty Images and continues to showcase his work through exhibitions and photographic publications. Alongside his photography, he works in publishing and multimedia, serving as a photo editor in various editorial offices. He was the first person in Italy to write a book on this professional role, *Professione Photo Editor* (Gremese Editore), followed by the volume *Il photo editing. Scegliere le immagini nel racconto fotografico (Emuse Edizioni). He teaches photography and photo editing at the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia and Bottega Immagine in Milan, as well as at Foto Scuola Lecce, and has lectured on the Master’s in Journalism at the University of Bologna. He regularly runs courses, workshops and portfolio reviews throughout Italy. Specialist magazines such as *Il Fotografo*, *Fotopratica*, *Gente di Fotografia* and *Photo* have featured his work. He loves playing with images and words: in the Pulcinoelefante series, his photographs engage in dialogue with texts by authors such as Alda Merini, Tonino Guerra and Enzo Sellerio. He has also published *55 fotograforismi* (Postcart Edizioni), a collection of aphorisms on photography. He is a member of the scientific committee of CIFA – the Italian Centre for Art Photography, a member of the Order of Journalists, and writes regularly about photography for *Il Fotografo* and *Il Fatto Quotidiano.it*.
