On Saturday 19 April, the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto will host the third instalment of the Tropical Party. An evening on the dance floor exploring boundary-pushing sounds and experimental music, ranging from reggae, ska, dancehall, dub, rocksteady and jungle.
Line-up
- Earl Gateshead // a vinyl journey through early reggae, ska, rocksteady, dub and roots, featuring the legendary releases from Trojan Records.
The London-based producer began his DJ career in 1979, playing reggae alongside punk gigs in Brixton. In the 2000s, he co-founded the Trojan Sound System for the iconic Trojan Records label, with which he toured the world for twelve years. He has also collaborated with Banksy, performing at the artist’s first three events, and remains the only DJ Banksy has ever worked with. Today he continues to perform solo, always using original vinyl, bringing reggae all over the world, from Europe to India, where he is active in the growing scene of the Goa Reggae Festival.
- DJ War // reggae, dub, dancehall sets played entirely on vinyl
DJ War, alias Antonio Conte, is one of the founders of Sud Sound System. From Lizzanello to Bologna, he has become one of the most sought-after selectors in Italy, with a vinyl collection that extends beyond reggae. Speaking on R&D Vibes, he recounted his first encounter with reggae, his connection with Militant P and his experience with Sud Sound System, right up to his latest productions with Ritmo Vitale. The episode was broadcast on 11 May, his birthday.
- DJ Dubin // reggae, dub, jungle
DJ and producer with the Salento-based duo Insintesi and organiser of the Tropical Party Salento, he has been a champion of low-frequency music for over twenty-five years. His sets are a mix of reggae, dub, tropical music and world sounds. He has played at clubs and international music festivals in Italy and abroad and has collaborated with, amongst others, Dr Das (Asian Dub Foundation), Sud Sound System, Congorock, Zion Train, Papet J (Massilia Sound System) and General Levy.
- P@ul // dub
A life spent pursuing and exploring reggae and all its nuances. He is in love with his homeland, Salento, with dub music and its powerful sounds.
