CINE?

Cinema at the Castle

A journey through the history and stories of cinema, from timeless masterpieces to arthouse films, to rediscover the Seventh Art in the evocative setting of the Castello Volante. Every Thursday, a new instalment featuring screenings, discussions and unexpected surprises

The weekly Thursday events of CINE? – Il cinema al Castello continue, the film series conceived by Magma aps and organised in collaboration with Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto. A century of cinema through the stories of its greatest figures, actors and filmmakers, tracing the timeline and cinematic movements from the 1920s to the 2020s.

Following the two-month programme in February and March dedicated to the first half of the 20th century – from German Expressionism to Italian Neorealism – on Thursday 3 April, the Castello Volante opens its doors to the bittersweet lightness of the Italian comedy with Mario Monicelli’s *I soliti ignoti* (1958).

But before delving into the daring misadventures of the clumsiest gang of petty thieves in cinema history, the audience will be put to the test with a cine-aperitif with an all-Italian flavour.
From 8 pm, seated at the tables of Nuvole Cocktail Bar, audience members can take part in our CINE? APERITIVO …a quiz!, an irresistible quiz on Italian cinema that will test their memory, wits and flashes of genius worthy of a well-orchestrated plan… or almost! Amidst anecdotes, trivia and last-minute challenges, the whole event will be accompanied by the unmissable special cocktail inspired by the evening’s film (aperitif, quiz and film – cost €10).
At 8.45 pm, the lights dim, the chatter dies down and Monicelli’s magical film comes to life on screen, with its stellar cast and unmistakable wit (film only – €2).
A unique opportunity to enjoy a great classic in an exceptional atmosphere, filled with laughter, cinema and fine food. Whether you’re a true connoisseur or simply a film lover, get ready for a textbook evening… for the perfect cinephile!

The spring air then brings the black-and-white European cinema of the 1960s to the screen at Castello Volante.

On Thursday 10 April at 8 pm, join us for French New Wave cinema, with a tribute to Agnès Varda in collaboration with Cinema del Reale. To kick off the evening, before delving into a cinema of glances and anticipation, straight from the Festa del Cinema del Reale, *Dialogue between Cecilia and Agnès* by Paolo Pisanelli, a lively conversation between Cecilia Mangini and Agnès Varda, two great pioneering women of the seventh art, discussing cinema, television and reality. Meanwhile, Nuvole Cocktail Bar awaits you with a tasting menu to accompany the screenings.

We then return to Italy on Thursday 17 April with a very young but already outstanding Stefania Sandrelli in *Io la conoscevo bene* (a 1965 drama directed by Antonio Pierangeli). This European female-led trilogy concludes on Thursday 24 April with *Persona* (1966), Ingmar Bergman’s most profound, mature and experimental work, which explores the inner drama of human existence
