CINE?

Cinema at the Castle

A journey through the history and stories of cinema, from timeless masterpieces to arthouse films, to rediscover the Seventh Art in the evocative setting of the Castello Volante. Every Thursday, a new instalment featuring screenings, discussions and unexpected surprises.

CINE? – Cinema at the Castle, the film festival conceived by Magma aps and organised in collaboration with Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto, ushers in the new millennium with its final events. This journey through the history of cinema from the 1920s to the present day reaches its final chapter, in which the technical and thematic developments explored in previous sessions will be summarised, in an attempt to identify the direction of contemporary cinema and its possible future trajectories, ranging from experimentation to the rediscovery of traditional trends.

And for this final month too, we’re back to playing with films: no titles on the programme, just clues for true cinema enthusiasts. It’s up to the audience to guess the film on the programme, guided by themes, suggestions and atmospheres.

As is tradition, the game will also take centre stage at the first event of the month, on Thursday 5 June at 8 pm, with the now unmissable CINEaperitivo games night at Nuvole Cocktail Bar. Participants will compete in a film-themed quiz at the tables, accompanied by the inevitable cocktail inspired by the film on the programme. Seated at the bistro tables, the lights will then dim and the screening will begin, for the themed evening ‘The Silences of Desire: impossible loves and fragments of time in Hong Kong cinema’ (8.45 pm). A visual and sensory journey, a film that set a new standard for style and melancholy, set amongst narrow corridors, thin walls and obsessive clocks.

Thursday 12 June sees the second event: ‘Through the Looking Glass: the Unconscious and Illusion in Surreal Hollywood’. On screen, one of the greatest psychological thrillers of the 21st century, for fans of the most visionary and labyrinthine cinema. A love story that transcends the boundaries of reality, immersing us in the dreamlike and dual vertigo of our times, crafted by a master filmmaker.

The tone shifts on Thursday 19 June, with an unusual screening entitled ‘And They Lived Imperfectly Ever After: Monsters and Pop Princesses in the Digital Age’. For those who think cartoons are just for children, you’ll discover a fairy tale that breaks the mould, packed with references and brimming with plot twists and nods to true film buffs. An evening of laughter with a cult animated film and a modern-day love story, starring an unconventional hero.

A farewell evening on Thursday 26 June to bring the festival to a close together and reflect on this long journey through a century of cinema, with the final screening of the series dedicated to ‘eternal returns’. *The Sleeping Giant: The Awakening of Neorealism in the Italian Suburbs* is an event that blends current affairs, tragedy and arthouse cinema. A tale of loneliness, violence and survival in a marginalised Italy, this work—both raw and lyrical—draws on the legacy of the finest Italian cinema, reimagines it and brings it back to the present day.
