CINE?

Cinema at the Castle

A journey through the history and stories of cinema, from timeless masterpieces to arthouse films, to rediscover the Seventh Art in the evocative setting of the Castello Volante. Every Thursday, a new instalment featuring screenings, discussions and unexpected surprises.

Are the 1970s coming to CINE? – Cinema at the Castle, the film festival conceived by Magma aps and organised in collaboration with Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto. A century of cinema through the stories of its greatest figures, actors and filmmakers, tracing the timeline and cinematic movements from the 1920s to the 2020s.

This historical journey through world cinema continues on Thursday 8 May with a special screening focusing on Italian political cinema: paranoid, grotesque, visionary. A journey into the workings of power, amidst corrupt institutions and betrayed ideals – a film that delves deep into the national psyche.
Preceded by the now unmissable CINE-aperitif at Nuvole Cocktail Bar for an evening of games and themed drinks… this time on the theme of ‘Investigation’!

On Thursday 15 May, the event ‘Sculpting Time: Dreams and Experimentation in Soviet Cinema’. A metaphysical parable straddling the realms of dreams and memory, set against the hypnotic splendour of Russia’s most experimental cinema, where space expands and time crumbles, with a masterpiece that speaks the language of silence and visions, for viewers willing to lose themselves – and perhaps find themselves again.

A completely different setting on 22 May, with science-fiction and cyberpunk dystopias for the screening ‘All Too Human’. A genre that begins with the post-human Los Angeles of a great classic of 1980s American cinema, which rewrote the rules of the genre, amidst acid rain and existential neon lights

We remain in America for the month’s final event, this time featuring Indiewood and pulp, on Thursday 29 May. We finally arrive in the 1990s, with the revival of US independent cinema. A gritty, sharp, reference-laden and brilliant cinema: the manifesto of a new generation that looks to the past only to shatter it.
