Feelm – From primitives to the future, under the artistic direction of Ginevra Nervi

Contemporary music meets early cinema: from 20 to 25 June, the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto is hosting the second edition of Feelm – From primitives to the future. Having previously explored the world of the Lumière brothers and Thomas Alva Edison under the guidance of the duo Underspreche, this year Feelm – under the artistic direction of Ginevra Nervi, a composer and producer whose artistic research centres on the exploration of vocal timbre – will pay tribute to Elettra Raggio, a diva and pioneer of silent cinema, with a live musical accompaniment to the feature-length film *La morte che assolve* by Carlo Alberto Lolli (1918).

The artistic residency, conceived, produced and promoted by Coolclub as part of the SEI Festival, organised in collaboration with the Centro Sperimentale di Roma, the Cineteca di Milano and the DAMS department at the University of Salento, will conclude on Saturday 25 June (free admission) with a final performance showcasing the work of the five artists involved. Featuring Ginevra Nervi, who was nominated last April for a David di Donatello Award in the ‘Best Original Song’ category for ‘Miles Away’ and whose album ‘The Disorder Of Appearances’ (La Tempesta), she will be joined by the Apulian saxophonist and composer Valerio Cosi, the Apulian drummer and composer Walter Forestiere, the Japanese pianist and producer Midori Hirano, and the Greek electronic musician and producer Jay Glass Dubs.

Produced by Raggio Films in Milan in 1918, “La morte che assolve” is the only surviving film starring the great silent-film diva Elettra Raggio. Directed by Carlo Alberto Lolli, the film also features the renowned stage actor Ermete Novelli, appearing here in his final film role. An eclectic artist, Elettra Raggio was an actress, film producer and writer. In the late 1950s, she donated her archive of photographs, film clips, promotional material and the only surviving copy of the film *La morte che assolve* – restored by the Cineteca di Milano – to the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana.

The evening will begin at 7.30 pm with an introductory talk featuring Paolo Tosini (lecturer in Film History at the University of Salento), Matteo Pavesi (director of the Milan Film Archive) and Valentina Rossetto (Experimental Centre of Cinematography). At 9.00 pm, a group of DAMS students – Giacomo Scardia, Gianni Sciambarruto, Simone Carrino, Francesco Grassi and Edoardo Presicce – will provide a live soundtrack for Nello Mauri’s “Idillio infranto” (1931). As far as we know at present, this is the first film conceived, produced and shot in Puglia, but it is also the last Italian silent film. Nothing is yet known about the director or his alleged wife, Dirce Greselin, an actress who played a supporting role in the film. Following the live soundtrack performance directed by Ginevra Nervi, the evening will conclude with a DJ set on the terraces of Castello Volante.

The Feelm residency will be documented in a film directed by Davide Faggiano and produced as part of the Puglia Sounds Producers 2022 programme organised by the Puglia Region (POC Puglia 2007/2013 – ‘Development of cultural and entertainment activities’ initiative).

Ginevra Nervi, born in Genoa in 1994, released her single ‘P!2’ – mastered by Heba Kadry (Björk, Ryuichi Sakamoto) – followed by further singles and the EP ‘Klastos’. Alongside her solo project, she composes soundtracks and original pieces for films and series on Netflix, Amazon, Rai and Mediaset (“Il Processo”, “Il Cacciatore 2”, “L’ispettore Coliandro”, “Curon”, “Skam 4”). In 2020, she took centre stage at the Venice Film Festival with the original soundtrack for Antonio Castaldo’s *Fuoco Sacro*, featuring the track “Miles away” for Mauro Mancini’s “Non odiare” and as production assistant on the soundtrack for Jorge Cuch’s film “50 (o dos ballenas)”. In 2021, Ginevra Nervi received her first David di Donatello nomination for the song “Miles Away” and won the “Talento di Genova” award.  She opened the 2022 Seeyousound Festival with a special live performance and composed the music for the SKY documentary film “Dante Fuga dagli Inferi” by Sebastiano Facco, featuring Toni Servillo. She is currently working on the original soundtracks for three further films (including a Brazilian production). “The Disorder Of Appearances” is her latest album, released on 10 June via La Tempesta, preceded by two singles. One of these, “Zero”, was co-written with Iosonouncane.
