In Italy, organising a film festival is increasingly becoming a form of resistance. And although nothing is yet known about the funding allocated for 2025 to the network of Apulian film festivals, the Cinema del Reale will go ahead, in a new and experimental format, with a flexible programme open to improvisation.
On 19 July at the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto, it will be a wild night of cultural resistance. An extraordinary event featuring the festival which, for twenty-two years, has been showcasing the most daring, intriguing and inventive cinema of the real world, combining screenings with music, visual arts and performances, and culminating in a collective ritual that keeps the festival-goers dancing until dawn.
It is an opportunity to come together in an informal and convivial atmosphere to reflect on the realities of the world, and to examine what is real and what is unreal through the films of big names in cinema and young filmmakers from the national and international scene.
To mark the occasion, the Festival’s iconic eye will feature the symbol of peace within it.
The Festa di Cinema del Reale keeps its summer appointment with its audience, a creative community that comes together every year to experience and take part in an engaging and original event which, over the course of twenty-two editions, has always been able to innovate and reinvent itself. The relationship with the audience is founded on the close bond between the staff, the volunteers and the community of the village of Corigliano d’Otranto, which is actively involved each year in the process of co-creating the Festival.
This special evening at the Festa di Cinema del Reale, under the artistic direction of Paolo Pisanelli and the creative direction of Francesco Maggiore, has been made possible thanks to the work and vision of Big Sur, OfficinaVisioni, the Cinema del Reale Association, and the support of the Municipality of Corigliano d’Otranto and Castello Volante, as well as the invaluable collaboration of associations, artists, musicians, volunteers and the community, who support the festival every year through their active participation. “We hope that the Puglia Region will continue to support this festival,” says the Cinema del reale team, “as maintaining the network of Apulian film festivals is no longer one of the Apulia Film Commission’s objectives.”
