On Saturday 16 September from 7.00 pm, the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto will host the launch of the ‘Queer è Ora’ project, an artistic and social research programme and a communication campaign that highlights the valuable work carried out by four CADs – anti-discrimination centres – operating in four Italian cities, through the stories and experiences of 15 individuals and groups belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.
The research was carried out in the cities of Perugia, Genoa, Bari, Foggia and Lecce, where the CADs and LGBTQIA+ associations operate, offering spaces and services to support the queer community. Sixteen images were created by visual artist Alessia Rollo, who reinterpreted the stories told by the people she met – whether staff at the centres or users of the services provided.
The portraits are inspired by works by women artists, transgender, non-binary and queer people, who are often overlooked in art history.
The project has taken the form of a photographic exhibition, on display at the Castello Volante until 19 July, a catalogue, and a social media and billboard campaign.
On Saturday 16 September, the catalogue itself will be presented; it is a visual and textual summary of the project, highlighting this collective narrative through the images of Alessia Rollo and the texts by Gaia Barletta (73100Gaya).
The billboard campaign – curated by Big Sur and visual designer Francesco Maggiore – will also be presented; this involves the City of Lecce, where posters featuring images from the project will be on display from 11 to 24 September; The social media campaign will also be showcased: a digital storytelling initiative that has highlighted – in addition to the portraits and words of the project’s protagonists – video stories created by Gianluca Rollo (Transparent).
The project is funded by UNAR – the National Office against Racial Discrimination – and is produced and curated by Transparent in collaboration with 73100Gaya and Big Sur.
The Queer è Ora Collective comprises:
Alessia Rollo, photographer and visual artist;
Gianluca Rollo (Transparent) and Gaia Barletta (73100Gaya), queer activists and cultural workers;
Francesco Maggiore (Big Sur), visual designer and cultural worker.
