The eighth edition of Classiche Forme, the International Chamber Music Festival founded and directed by the world-renowned pianist Beatrice Rana, continues to offer, until 21 July, a packed programme of great chamber music and artists from the international scene, set against the backdrop of Salento’s artistic landmarks and natural beauty.
On Friday 19 July, at 9.00 pm, the second ‘Fuoriporta’ event takes place with the eagerly awaited stop in Corigliano d’Otranto for the ‘ARCHItetture Sonore’ concert at the Castello Volante.

Four leading figures from the international chamber music scene will perform here, including Annelien Van Wauwe, a BBC New Generation Artist, winner of the ARD Music Competition and a Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, and violinist Liya Petrova, first-prize winner at the Carl Nielsen Competition in Denmark. They will be joined by Andrea Cellacchi on bassoon, Mirko Landoni on horn, Giuseppe Russo Rossi on viola, Aleksey Shadrin on cello, and Giorgio Magistroni on double bass. Together they will perform Rossini’s Duet for Cello and Double Bass and Beethoven’s Septet for Winds and Strings in E flat major, Op. 20 – two masterpieces from the Classical and early Romantic periods.

The programme opens with Gioachino Rossini’s lively Duet for Cello and Double Bass, an early work that already reveals the Pesaro-born composer’s melodic genius. Written in 1824 for the virtuoso double bassist Domenico Dragonetti, this piece is remarkable for the brilliant interplay between the two low-register instruments, which exchange melodic and accompanying roles in a fast-paced, virtuosic dialogue.

The evening continues with Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Septet, Op. 20, a milestone in chamber music. Composed in 1800, this six-movement work for an unusual ensemble comprising clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and double bass bridges the gap between Classicism and Romanticism. The work stands out for its rich timbre, expressive depth and perfect balance between the seven instruments. From the solemn opening Adagio to the energetic Finale, via a delightful Theme and Variations, the Septet demonstrates Beethoven’s extraordinary mastery of chamber music composition, foreshadowing the innovations of his mature works.
