In collaboration with the 20th edition of the Locomotive Jazz Festival in Corigliano d’Otranto, the Castello Volante and the Corigliano d’Otranto Infopoint are organising a special event that combines an understanding of the local area, environmental awareness and community participation: ‘The Waterway and the Pozzelle’, a free guided tour at sunset exploring the historical traces of local water management.
A leisurely and insightful journey through the hydraulic history of the Corigliano landscape, from the castle’s inner courtyard to the ‘Pozzelle’ – ancient cisterns that were once vital to the community’s survival. A route of approximately 3.5 km, suitable for everyone, led by a landscape archaeologist who will help us interpret the visible and invisible signs of water in a land that has always tackled its scarcity with ingenious and sustainable solutions. The walk is not merely a scenic excursion, but an invitation to reflect on the value of water as a common good, to be protected at a time when water resources are increasingly threatened by climate crises, pollution and waste.
This will be followed by the opening concert of the Locomotive Jazz Festival in Pozzelle. Naomi Berrill, an Irish cellist and composer, will open the festival with *Sea Warrior*, a performance inspired by water as a vital yet fragile element. For the occasion, she will play a unique instrument, crafted from wood salvaged from migrants’ boats – a symbol of suffering but also of rebirth through music.
