On Friday 13 and Saturday 14 September, the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto will host ‘Nel Castello il mondo’: an event combining culture, music, cinema and cuisine, dedicated to the communities and families of foreign nationals living and working in this Salento town.
The programme will kick off on Friday at 5.30 pm at the “Trame libere” Municipal Library, with an event for young children organised by Magma Aps, in collaboration with volunteers from the Bium-bò reading group. During the event, selected passages will be read aloud from the ‘Mamma Lingua’ suitcase, which contains around 100 volumes of the finest children’s literature translated into various languages, thereby creating a cultural and linguistic bridge that celebrates the diversity and richness of the community. At 7.30 pm, the Sala Cavallerizza will host a screening of the documentary *Il cerchio*, written and directed by the Italian-French director and screenwriter Sophie Chiarello, winner of the 2023 David di Donatello Award. The documentary follows the development of twenty children in Class B from Year 1 to Year 5. Coming from different backgrounds and with varied life stories, they form a close-knit group thanks to the practice of “circle time”. Seated in a circle on the floor, the children, their teacher and the director with her camera engage in regular dialogue and exchange views throughout their five years at primary school. This special moment of listening becomes a space where the children share their thoughts, emotions and reflections on their view of the world. ‘Il cerchio’ thus offers a portrait of contemporary childhood, reflecting today’s Italy and offering a glimpse of tomorrow’s.
On Saturday 14 September from 9.00 pm, the terraces of Nuvole, the cocktail bar and bistro at Castello Volante, will be transformed into a stage for flavours and cultural encounters. The evening will begin with a tasting of traditional dishes (tickets €5), prepared with passion and authenticity by the women and men from the various foreign communities involved. Each dish tells a story, a journey, a tradition, creating a unique gastronomic experience that invites participants to explore the world through food. An unmissable opportunity to be swept away by the aromas, colours and flavours that embrace cultures both near and far, brought together in a single place. From 10.30 pm, the hall of the ancient manor house will host the grand musical finale featuring Elettro Mascarimirì and Cesare Dell’Anna. The new project by Claudio “Cavallo” Giagnotti, frontman of the band Mascarimirì, combines the “Tamburreddhu Salentino” (a frame drum) with vinyl records and digital sounds, creating a soundscape that blends the music of southern Italy with influences from around the world: from the Balkans to South America (Cumbia, Forró, Calypso), from the Middle East (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan) to the south of France and Spain, right through to Gitanistan, “the worlds of international Romani music”. For the occasion, the DJ set will be enhanced by the trumpet of Cesare Dell’Anna, known for his ongoing experimentation across classical, jazz, brass band, electronic and folk music, with a particular focus on Balkan sounds. With a career spanning over thirty years, Dell’Anna has collaborated with numerous Italian and international artists, performing at major festivals and clubs around the world with his various projects (GirodiBanda, Opa Cupa, Tax Free, Zina, Tarantavirus, DN3, My Miles, amongst others). He is also the artistic director of numerous festivals and the founder of Albania Hotel, 11/8 Records and Livello 11/8, and has worked in film, theatre and the arts.
“Nel Castello il mondo”, produced in collaboration with the Municipal Commission for Equal Opportunities, the SEI Festival at Coolclub and Castello Volante, forms part of the programme for Borgo Volante, a project by the Municipality of Corigliano d’Otranto, supported by the Ministry of Culture – Fund for Development and Cohesion.
