On Thursday 8 August, as part of “I ddomada grika – La settimana grika”, Ninfa Giannuzzi (vocals, ukulele, synth) and Valerio Daniele (baritone guitar and electronics), accompanied by Giorgio Distante (trumpet and electric bass) and Fabio Moschettini (classical guitar and ukulele), will perform tracks from “Amartìa” (desuonatori) at the SEI Festival at Coolclub.
The duo, formed in 2013 as part of the movement to revive the traditional Salento repertoire, performs songs in Griko. At the heart of the project lies the creation of original music and lyrics, and the pursuit of a personal style in which themes, language and poetry are situated within the current historical context. An ancient and vibrant remnant, the backbone of past communities, Grico changes its function in the duo’s work and is elevated to an expressive register. It is rendered in terms that are often paradoxical and imaginative, and played with like a kaleidoscopic carousel of sounds and images. Musically, the duo creates entirely original material, keeping the link with tradition close to their hearts whilst seeking a sound deliberately suspended between acoustic, electric and electronic, treating lyrics and melodies freely and without being bound by specific musical languages. The arrangements thus span various sonic realms, touching on different genres but with the clear intention of not adhering to any of them.
