BazArt is back – the eagerly awaited Christmas event featuring a festival and market of creative produce, which on Saturday 14th (from 4 pm to midnight) and Sunday 15th December (from 11 am to 9 pm), will bring the Castello Volante in Corigliano d’Otranto to life. For two days, the ancient manor house will be transformed into a creative hub where images, stories and inspiration take the form of original artefacts characterised by significant added value derived from their handcrafted or ethical nature: unique objects made from recycled materials, illustrations, crafts, design, musical productions, publishing, and food and wine.
BazArt has been conceived by Big Sur in collaboration with Coolclub and Multiservice Eco, and organised in partnership with the Municipal Council and the Corigliano d’Otranto Info Point as part of the ‘Borgo Volante’ project, funded by the Ministry of Culture – Development and Cohesion Fund, and the Apulia Region’s Info Point Enhancement Scheme – 2024.
An original event created to bring a spectacle of the imagination to life, to celebrate and support Apulian research, experimentation and independent productions, whilst fostering the exchange of ideas and supporting the local economy.
BazArt brings together and connects illustrators, craftspeople, designers, small publishers and local businesses. For two days, exhibitors will take up residence in the spaces of Corigliano d’Otranto Castle, allowing visitors to step inside their workshops, as it were, to discover first-hand their stories, their practices, production techniques, and to touch, see, hear and taste their creations within one of Puglia’s most beautiful castles, which in recent years has become one of the region’s most vibrant cultural centres.
The Nuvole space, Castello Volante’s bistro and cocktail bar, is a workshop of flavour where visitors can enjoy food and wine experiences amidst storytelling, history and tastings, set against the castle’s friezes and inscriptions. Here, the history of the peoples who have passed through the castle and the Salento region is transformed into a culinary journey, offering the chance to discover wines, beers, local produce and a special menu.
BazArt is also a showcase for contemporary music. Visitors to the festival-market will be able to enjoy live performances by Osso Sacro, on Saturday 14 December at 9.00 pm, and Hysterrae on Sunday 15 December at 7.00 pm (free entry), organised by UASC in collaboration with Coolclub and Sei Festival, with the support of Nuovo Imaie.
Osso Sacro is a musical project dedicated to the exploration, reworking and repositioning of oral and sound narratives from the Sannio region, an ancient territory nestled between the present-day provinces of Benevento, Caserta and Avellino. Osso Sacro pursues a process-oriented approach: a radical re-examination of the contemporary through the ancient and vice versa, navigating between lost oral traditions and improvisation, between ‘text without a trace’ and contemporary metrics.
Hysterrae is a trio of women from different ethnic and musical backgrounds. Three leading artists from the Italian world music scene, plus an Iranian multi-instrumentalist and an electronic music producer. From Iran to Campania, from the Itria Valley to Salento, and beyond. Percussive rhythms and evocative vocal polyphony meet elements of dub and EDM, transporting listeners back to a ritual rooted both in ancient times and in the electronic tribalism of contemporary sound.
On Saturday 14 December from 10.00 pm, the Nuvole venue will host the Bazart Party, a sparkling celebration to exchange Christmas greetings, do some last-minute shopping amongst the artisans’ stalls and bring the third edition of this creative market-party to a close with dancing.
