In collaboration with the Gepa Days organised by AIAPP Puglia (Association of Landscape Archaeology), as part of the participatory process leading to the establishment of the Ecomuseum of the ‘pozzelle’ and the rural landscape of Grecìa Salentina.

The pozzelle are a precious and unique asset, an ingenious system for collecting and filtering rainwater, which in past centuries enabled human settlement in an area lacking in surface water resources.
THE WATER AND POZZELLE TRAIL is a short guided walk which, starting from the Castle, will lead to the Pozzelle of Corigliano d’Otranto.
Using the methods of landscape archaeology, participants will be guided in interpreting the historical traces of the interaction between humans and the environment, with particular reference to water supply.
The mini-trek will begin with the evocative photographs on this theme from the 1920s, drawn from the Palumbo archive and on permanent display in the halls of the Castello Volante. Starting from these photographs, and after discovering how the Castello and the houses in the historic centre obtained their water in the past, the route will follow the ‘watercourse’ through the fountains of the historic centre, through the Giardino della Quercia Vallonea, past the immense structure of ‘La Vasca’ of the Apulian Aqueduct, at the bottom of a karst sinkhole (Laccu te lu Murica) and finally to the Pozzelle.

Duration: approx. 2 hours
An easy route, suitable for everyone.
