Parallel Eyes

by Alessia Rollo

“Parallel Eyes” is a multimedia project born out of the artist’s desire to re-examine the cultural identity of Southern Italy in visual, historical and sociological terms, and to develop a different narrative centred on myths, rituals and ceremonies.

The project comprises two main bodies of work: on the one hand, the manipulation of archive material produced in the 1950s and 1960s by photographers and videographers associated with the Italian Neorealist movement; and, on the other, an intervention on the images using digital or analogue manipulation techniques, painting on negatives or perforating frames, etc.: the aim is to restore to the images the magical and ritualistic aspect that was erased by the scientific and positivist approach of the time.

Meanwhile, the artist is documenting the rituals that still exist in Southern Italy, with the aim not of creating a new anthropological catalogue of celebrations, but of constructing a different visual narrative in order to change our perception of the past and build a new imagination of our future.

The project forms part of the exhibition ‘P.P. Pasolini – Sette scatti’, seven photographs curated by Cecilia Mangini.
