It’s Queer Time

in collaboration with Big Sur, Manifatture Knos and Apulia Film Commission

“Queer è Ora” is a photographic project by photographer Alessia Rollo, conceived and produced by the Salento Rainbow Film Fest in collaboration with the cultural association Transparent, which explores the meanings and nuances of the word ‘queer’.

‘Queer’ is a British term that originated as a derogatory term and an insult directed at the gay community, but which, over the years, has undergone a process of reappropriation by the LGBTQI community, transforming its meaning. Today, ‘queer’ conveys light-heartedness, exploration, fluidity and harmony.

The ‘Queer è Ora’ art project involved a group of people from the Apulian queer community who engaged with seven terms chosen as a framework to attempt to capture, through stories and images, the essence of the queer spirit.

A portrait for each word: Wounds, Escape, Breath, Pride, Exaggeration, Elevation, Explosion – stages that everyone may find themselves grappling with in life whilst searching for their identity and striving to rise above limitations, fears and social constraints.

The exhibition “Queer is Now” is a celebration of light-heartedness and personal and collective wellbeing: a mosaic of stories designed to evoke a sense of peace that connects us to the here and now.
