Pepa Luz

by Anna Quarta

Pepa Luz is a hub for the production and promotion of Italian artisanal lighting design.  On the one hand, Pepa Luz produces and sells lighting fixtures – table lamps, chandeliers and lampshades – whilst on the other, it passes on this traditional craft to young people and industry professionals. Pepa Luz embodies a passion for research and aesthetics, and a respect for materials and the environment.
In this installation, created for the Festa di Cinema del Reale, Pepa Luz’s lighting interacts with the ‘Quadritos’ by the artist Brunella Tegas.
Anna Quarta, a craftswoman and designer from southern Italy since the 2000s, is a professional in the sector who grew up in multi-ethnic environments and boasts collaborations with international brands and celebrities. The project focuses on: giving new life to ancient art through a contemporary lens; combining production techniques with an understanding of Italian artistic trends in design and craftsmanship; and a focus on reusing, recycling and repurposing design and furnishing objects, as well as fashion and craft pieces. The lighting products are, in fact, created using various craft techniques such as prototyping, sewing, crochet, cut-and-sew, fringing, trimmings, the recovery and restyling of fabrics and textiles, and the restoration of disused materials transformed into bases for lighting products.
Since 2019, she has specialised in traditional Florentine craftsmanship thanks to a new part-time role at a historic workshop. Here, she continues to create lighting pieces for restaurants, creative enterprises and design firms of European calibre, such as the lighting design brand Servomuto and the fashion designer Antonio Marras. In 2022, she decided to return to working for herself, with the aim of launching her own range of lighting fixtures on the one hand, and sharing her expertise and knowledge with others on the other.
