Supernovae

by Valeria Puzzovio

It is precisely from the need to tell one’s own story – and that of others – that the ‘Supernovae’ project was born: a series of analogue collages created using photographs from the artist’s own family archive and those of others. The idea is to preserve memories and cherish life stories, bringing them to life through a fresh interpretation. In this way, to recount and preserve new memories. Each collage has its own frame, which also carries its own history (having been found at a second-hand market) and which, like a tailor-made garment, enhances the collage’s beauty and strengths. Central to all the works is the theme of emptiness: the absence of something or someone, of a place or a distant time. This is evident in the clean cut-outs of subjects or parts of photographs, which are then assembled with other images, taking on new meanings, new stories and identities. A supernova is a star that explodes; it is a star that dies, yet in dying releases such a vast amount of energy that it shines brighter than an entire galaxy. We are all great stars; we are all supernovae. And our story must be told.
