In Greek mythology, the seer Tiresias is said to have been transformed into a woman for seven years for disturbing two snakes mating on Mount Cillene. Niya B reinterprets this myth through an eco-transfeminist lens via ritual performances, workshops and sound explorations. The project is called Ekdysis – the biological term referring to the process by which reptiles shed their outer layer of skin. Challenging the traditional, patriarchal way of constructing history, Niya B draws on her own autobiography to reimagine this metamorphosis as a transgender mythopoesis, directly influenced by ecology, the feminine/Other and the non-human. The video installation has been created in collaboration with Domus Artist Residency, a space for research and dialogue for international artists and curators in a symbolic location: Galatina, the birthplace of Tarantism.
Niya-B
She is a transfeminist artist who works at the intersections of visual art and performance, exploring themes related to ecology, (trans)gender politics and equity in mental health. Niya uses video, soundscapes, text and live performance to create a meditative space of vulnerability, affection and interdependence.
