Signs and meanings peer out from the windows of Castello De Monti. These are works that spring from the imagination of artists in residence at Castello Volante, designed to embrace both new and ancient narratives. The idea stems from an architectural feature: a series of windows in a part of the castle, currently disused and roofless, become an unprecedented space to be used to host new narratives. The history and legends of the ancient manor engage with the present. This year, new figures, born from the pen of Vincenzo D’Alba, inhabit the architectural spaces, rewriting their history and creating new layers of symbolism. For the ‘Affacci’ project, we asked the artist-in-residence, Vincenzo D’Alba, to reinterpret the metaphorical and anthropological messages contained in the faces, symbols and inscriptions that decorate and give meaning to one of Puglia’s most fascinating examples of military architecture. A journey between reality and legend, between light and shadow, and ultimately between history and the present day. The installation has been realised thanks to a collaboration with two local companies: Sprech, a leading manufacturer of outdoor coverings. Special thanks to Pasquale and Lucia Rescio.
Vincenzo D’Alba
He is an architect, designer and co-founder of Kiasmo, a studio specialising in the design, production and marketing of artistic and industrial products, characterised by high quality and a strong connection to the local area. Kiasmo’s output is interwoven with and blends into the culture and geographical context of its home region. Vincenzo D’Alba’s residency, in fact, involves several local businesses: Sprech, Fratelli Colì and Tessitura Calabrese.
